scandals in place of investigations
Several scandals have surfaced in the Prime Minister's Office over the past few days... and lots of arguing over who actually knew what and who didnt know what and when and who said what to who and who tried to change protocols and who didn't....
I am not going to comment on those scandals. I dont think we have enough information to know what really happened. I personally don't understand much of what has been reported or the ramifications of what was supposedly done and who was doing illegal things and who was hurt by those actions...
That being said, I will say these arguments and investigations and exposes and attacks and all that are all superfluous. There is one thing that is needed that will get to the bottom of everything. If we would have a State Commission of Enquiry, the investigative body that PM Netanyahu has blocked from day 1 from being established, it would look into all these aspects of what was going on and we would get some answers. But since we cant have a formal investigation, we have to rely on isolated investigations, isolated incidents, leaks on specific issues and then argue about who is really responsible and who really did what. Just set up the formal investigation already and let the people start getting some real answers and the fuller picture of what happened.

biting your nose to spite the face
I am finding it fascinating to see the calls from MKs (including formers ministers, deputy ministers and even prime ministers) on the "Right" for an investigative committee appointed by the government into the discovery of the police spying on Israeli citizens via spy software on phones.
Why?
Because this has been going on for years. It did not just start a few months ago and quickly get revealed. That means this happened under their own governments, for years, the ones they served in and headed.
This investigation of some sort is absolutely necessary (I dont know or care which type, but an investigation is necessary). I can only imagine the committee discovering past Ministers of Internal Security, those responsible for the police, and maybe others as well, being discovered as either having been asleep at the job or being complicit. I can only imagine the irony of them calling for the investigation thinking they are harming this current government only to discover they will have brought themselves down int he process.

Italy vs Israel
Italy suffered a terrible tragedy on Sunday when the cable of a cable car snapped and the car crashed into a wooded mountain. 14 people died (including some Israelis - no matter how small a people we are, how small a country Israel is, it sometimes seems as if the Jew and Israelis are everywhere and somehow involve din almost every crazy incident anywhere in the world) and one child is in critical condition.
By Monday Italy already launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
In Meron 45 people died on Lag B'Omer, with hundreds injured (with varying degrees of severity). More than 3 weeks later, Israel has yet to launch an investigation into the matter. Not only that but just yesterday coalition members, including MKs from the party that represents all, or almost all, the people injured and killed, voted against an attempt to establish such an investigation. At best they are arguing about what type of investigation to conduct by what type of investigative body. It seems as if they are going to argue about it until it is no longer an issue and it just goes away with everyone having moved on....

Netanyahu wants more investigations like his
PM Netanyahu is a funny guy.
It was just reported that the Likud, .i.e. Netanyahu and his people, just filed a request/demand that the Attorney General investigate the connections between MK Itzik Shmuley (Labor) and the Yediot Achronot newspaper. The suspicion to be investigated is some type of connection between the two leading Yediot to write favorable articles about Shmuley.
One of Netanyahu's tactics in speaking against the investigation into one of his bribery charges is comparing his situation to other politicians who have received favorable treatment by newspapers and asking why none of them are under investigation. I don't know why he is calling for an investigation into Shmuley but did not make the same request for an investigation into Lapid, whom he pointed out weeks ago as having a similar situation with a newspaper and friendship with its owner, but for now he is demanding an investigation into Shmuley and Yediot.
This is cute, and if the Attorney General accepts the request and opens an investigation, I hope Shmuley is clean, but if not he should pay the price like anyone else.
That being said, there is a clear difference between a Prime Minister allegedly trading favors and attempts to close down competing newspapers in exchange for favorable articles and between a newspaper writing a favorable article or three about a regular Member of Knesset. I think Netanyahu should have to present some sort of evidence pointing to a nefarious relationship between the two in order to demand an investigation and not just the fact that some nice articles were written.

hold off on the Netanyahu investigation
Sara Netanyahu is going to be interrogated under caution regarding her behavior in the PM residence.
I've said it before - I think Benjamin Netanyahu has been PM long enough. I think it is time for him to announce this as his last term in office and that he will be retiring from politics after the term concludes.
Despite my thinking that Netanyahu should be doing other things besides for the job of Prime Minister, I don't think this investigation should be taking place right now.
If people in the Netanyahu family are suspected of crimes that are related to the functioning of the Prime Minister - such as taking bribes, treason, corruption, and the like - then it should be investigated, even while he is in office,and he, and/or any involved family members, should have to answer whatever questions are asked in an investigation.
An investigation like this, though, is not relevant to the office and its functioning. This can be a major distraction to the prime minister (and he also holds the roles and responsibilities of multiple ministers in his own government) , especially as he is functioning in such a tumultuous time (though when isn't it), and this is too much of a distraction. This type of investigation can wait until the Netanyahus are out of office. Put in safeguards so that whatever they are suspect of cannot happen again, but this investigation should be put on hold until a later date.

elections are coming, so are the investigations
I find it amazing that an investigation that has been going on for about 7-8 years against Avigdor Lieberman can be pretty dead in the water, and then suddenly jump to life.
Nothing happens in the open investigation for years. Suddenly, two-three weeks before elections, with Lieberman's star seemingly on the rise, and all of the sudden the police detains 7 of his confidantes as part of the ongoing investigation.
What is the most amazing is how blatant and clear the bias against him is. They don't even try to hide it.
