Must've been 30 years ago I read an article in the local Jewish paper about how the IDF tried to create a Chareidi unit and ensure that there would be no objections. They consulted various Chareidi rabbis. They went and got mehadrin food. They assigned only male instructors. They set up the schedule to ensure Shabbos would be off. And what was the response when the conscripts showed up? We only eat mehadrin min mehadrin. We don't want Druze or non-religious instructors. We hold Shabbos times that are still going when you say Shabbos is over! You are insulting us!
