Marzel gets kicked out of the elections, what happens to Yachad now?

The electoral board today invalidated Baruch Marzel from running for Knesset. The vote passed by one vote, 17-16, and Marzel is out, unless the Supreme Court overturns it on appeal.

While Zoabi was kicked out by a large majority, 27-6, Marzel was kicked out by a razor thin margin of 17-16.

With Marzel out, assuming it stands (which might not be the case), means the top 4 slots of Yachad are going to be filled by Eli Yishai's party members. The fourth slot will now be held by Sasson Terebelsi. The next slot, #5 on the list, will be an Otzma member who moves up a notch - Rav Amital Barali.

According to the results of a search (I am not personally familiar with him), it seems Rabbi Barali has sat in jail for calling on soldiers to ignore orders during the Disengagement.

I don't know if the Left considers him any better than Baruch Marzel, but they just might have gotten him into the Knesset. Marzel might be more of a symbol of racism, which Barali might not be, so maybe they'll be ok with it.

The bigger problem is that now Yachad's top 4 slots are filled with Yishai's people and no Otzma people. With them polling at 3-5 seats, an Otzma person might not be realistic in some people's eyes, and maybe the chardalim from Habayit Hayehudi who were supporting Yachad might leave, or Otzma supporters might leave.

One good thing, in my opinion, is that Dudi Shwamenfeld, previously number 7 on the joint list, now moves up to 6, making his entry into the Knesset slightly more realistic. It is still beyond the current polling, but it does increase his chances. I like Shwamenfeld and would like to see him in the Knesset.

So, it seems that invalidating Marzel causes more of an issue than just for Marzel himself.

  1. Whom do I vote for?????February 12, 2015 5:47 PM

Has anyone put together a compare/contrast chart of the positions of some of the main parties? Particularly, wrt the palestinians, the two/one state solution, social/economic issues, and whatever else there is out there that people think are important?

  2. Whom do I vote for????? - Yachad would be the right party and they stand for all the right things. That's why they have such an uphill battle.

  3. I don't see Eli Yishai as standing for much besides sour grapes. I still don't see how I could support him since he didn't want Ben-Ari.

  4. I still see Yishai as having merits for making the effort to join forces forces of Haredi and Religious Zionist communities.

If Rav Amital Barali sat in jail for encouraging soldiers to do the right thing, then he has my vote.

We have very short memories. Rav Avraham Shapira ztz"l told soldiers to refuse the same kind of orders, and said that they should not only sit in jail, if they had to, but to be proud to sit in jail.

Rav Meir Kahane hy"d suggested that sitting in jail for the sake of Eretz Yisrael (Torah & Am Yisrael), should be a requirement for semicha. I believe he was being tongue in cheek, but it matches the hakhamim who have been arrested, threatened with arrest, or detained for questioning: Rav Lior, Rav Yisrael Ariel, Rav Shapira (Yitzhar), Rav Shmuel Eliyahu, Rav David Drukman (Qerayoth), and Rav P'lei (Yitzhar), and others, those who see the ever increasing s'tiroth between halakha and Israeli law, as well as those who are behind this.... those who hold the Torah's authority over that of men, and anti-Torah men at that.

    They all have my vote.

  5. This is one of those things that, were I living in Israel, I'd have to pull my hair out. It's like living in America and seeing BHO (middle name: Hussein) destroying America. Marzel is just who Israel needs to get things going on the right and straight path to a Jewish Homeland.
