  1. Didn't he forget to discuss the cost of buying an apartment, which makes the wedding just as expensive as the waste of money weddings in the US?

    1. good point. except, to be fair, they walk away with an apartment, so it isnt a waste of money like a one-night event such as a wedding

    2. You're right, but if the focus is on look how much cheaper we are than you, they really aren't cheaper, maybe just more wisely spent. But that doesn't take away from the fact that a fortune is being spent. If you can't afford 20,000 you can't afford 40,000 even if the extra 20 is an investment. Cashflow wise you are still cash poor.

    3. much of the money they are saving from the wedding spending is going to that apartment. also, the couples spending a lot on the wedding are also (at some point) going to be buying an apartment, so they both end up with apartments. I'd call it a wash and an irrelevant point. people need a place to live.

    4. I would distinguish with you. The couple spending a lot o the wedding I would think would buy an apartment when and if they can afford one. So ultimately, the wedding in overall costs is not cheaper.

    5. There is a huge pushback on the apartment buying. In many communities, they have banned it or calling out against it. In addition, even for the ones that buy for their children, they will quite often only put down the down payment and have the couple pay the mortgage.
The community is unable to sustain the apartment buying, so they are moving away from it organically. This is the driving push for much of the (quiet but dramatic) change in the community including higher education and working.
