terrorists in Mea Shearim

The other day Mk Yaakov "Ketzaleh" Katz went to Mea Shearim to daven in a shul that had been built by his grandfather. While there he was attacked by the thugs of Mea Shearim who call themselves "Sikrikim".

Yaakov Katz has now said that he will not take it sitting down, like others have such as Moshe Gafni, Uri Maklev, and Eli Yishai, but is committed to working to get this group and anybody associated with them listed as a terror organization.

I don't know how he will define who they are and who is included in the group - as far as I know they have no official affiliation as a group, the way Hamas does. Either way, he says he is committed to getting this accomplished by Pesach time. I wish him luck.

Ketzaleh said,"The community is afraid because the police are not there. The police are also afraid of them, for some reason.... this is a group that doesn't keep Torah and mitzvos, but are a group of thugs. They have peyos and beards, but everyone knows they don't keep the mitzvos...I have filed a complaint with the police. I am not Maklev or Gafni. I took this job upon myself, that until Pesach the "Sikrikim" will be declared a terror organization and any contact with members will be considered cooperating with a terror organization..Maklev and Gafni were also attacked, but they are cowards and didn't go to complain, but I won't rest until they are declared a terror organization. We will deal with them all, in a legal manner."

  3. He makes an important statement. One that many of us have been saying for years; but he can use his position to make it public.

  4. I wish him luck in a worthy endeavor. When a group of thugs are allowed to behavior how ever they want, they are empowered to continue.

  5. They only way he will be able to deal with it is by bringing in with him next time a handful of noar gvaot. They will put up a good fight to the sikrikim.

  6. I feel a necessity to mention something to everyone.

This "cute" way of responding to something like this by saying, "Deal with it by bringing in a handful of noar gvaot, and they will put up a good fight against the sikrikim", (this is not an exact quote from anyone, it is a combination of things I have been hearing about these types of incidents for more than eight years), may make us "feel good", but it is not even a minor type of solution.

The Dati-Leumi community must stand up against the unjustified violence by the "Noar HaGevaot", just as the Chareidi community must stand up against the unjustified violence by the "Sikrikim". There simply have to be clear strong statements made by leaders in each community that this type of violence is totally wrong, is in no way "self-defense", and is simply in direct conflict with the Torah way of life.

Until leaders in ALL communities are truly willing to confront the "violent splinter groups" associated with their communities (or however you wish to call these kinds of people who clearly define themselves as part of a more mainstream group but commit unconscionable acts in the name of the more mainstream group), we will not be able to stop most of these incidents, because the silence of the leaders will indicate to regular people in the more mainstream groups that the leaders do not object "that much" to the violent undertakings of these "splinter groups".

Once again, I remind us all that we need leaders with true integrity who are not afraid to stand up for truth and justice and the true Torah way of life!

  7. @Catriel Lev

they won't try stop these thugs for the same reasons that the hareidi leadership won't try and stop their thugs:

    1) feelings of fear
    2) feeling that these people, while dangerous and maybe slimy, serve a purpose
    3) mixture of the above

It is unfortunately quite likely that you are correct, which is why I remind us all that we need leaders with true integrity who are not afraid to stand up for truth and justice and the true Torah way of life!
