MK Litzman's law proposal to protect Jerusalem from negotiations fails

Who is Right? Who is Left? who is Center? does it matter? is it relevant? is there a way to determine it?

While you perhaps thought that this is a fairly right-wing government, with the Likud and Habayit Hayehudi leading the way, you might want to rethink that.
If you thought Habayit Hayehudi people or Likud people are specifically right-wing, you might want to rethink that.
If you thought the Haredi parties were right-wing or left-wing, you might want to rethink that.
If you thought the Haredi parties were united in Knesset, you might want to rethink that.

MK Yaakov Litzman (UTJ) submitted a law proposal by which 80 MKs would be required to negotiate giving parts of Jerusalem as part of a peace deal.

Litzman's proposal was rejected, but it is interesting to see how. Litzman lost the vote 12 in favor to 51 opposed. Most haredi MKs stepped out so as to not vote on the law . Most of the Likud and Habayit Hayehudi MKs stepped out so as to avoid voting on the law.

MK Moshe Zalman Feiglin voted in favor, against the position of most of the Likud MKs. MK Ruby Rivlin did not step out but announced that he is not participating in the vote. MK Porush voted in favor.

UTJ MKs said they had supported the proposal in order to oppose a law proposed by Yesh Atid in favor of gay marriage and tax benefits. When Yesh Atid pulled their bill, they decided to either pull this bill as well or to just walk out.

MK Feiglin said he knew Litzman was proposing this law in order to create problems for the coalition, but he decided to vote for it anyway, as he did on some other laws as well, because it is proper to vote for this law.

And, as Moshe Feiglin said, when he got married and said "אם אשכחך ירושלים תשכח ימיני" he was referring to this..

  1. Moshe Feiglin has always stated that in Israel if the people vote for a left-wing government, they get a left-wing government; and if they vote for a right-wing government, they still get a left-wing government.

  2. Sometimes it's revealed to the public that the MKs play these games with regard to 'if you pull your vote proposal, I'll pull mine'. Not such a long time ago, you posted a picture taken of MKs from various parties sitting together in some sofa area chit-chatting. The shouting and posturing is merely for the cameras.

Given that, I recall one of the times that Feiglin was running for Likud leadership, and was asked by the Likud didn't like him. His answer was that he cannot be bought with jobs or favours. In this Knesset, he has shown that he is one of the few that has integrity.
