It is nice to have Haredim

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said today, in his speech at the Jerusalem Post Conference, spoke about three vectors of influence/power in Israeli politics. He said the three vectors are 1) the national power, being the Right wing, 2) the globalist, humanist approach, which would be considered the Left wing, and 3) the religious - the Haredi and Orthodox. Practically, Bennett said, we need all three forces. We are a Jewish country, "I am happy that there are Haredim, but we need to limit their political sway".

Awww, that's nice. Bennett is happy there are Haredim. How sweet. Maybe we should put them in a  museum. It is nice to have Haredim. In a museum we would always be able to look at them and enjoy their presence.

But we need to limit their political sway. That is not a smart thing to say. Even if you believe it, you don't say it out loud. It is also funny - the head of a party of 6 mandates yet serves as Prime Minister is talking about other parties having too much power and punching above their weight.

All these politicians seem to forget, politics is a cycle. Right now you are on top and someone else is at the bottom of the totem pole, but at some point that will be reversed. If you can't work together and respect each other when you are on top, don't be surprised when you are treated similarly by them when they are on top. And that is true for all of them. Bennett seems to be forgetting it now and will almost definitely pay a price for this later, but those before him forgot it then and are paying the price for it now.

  1. I'm sure you realize that there's a big difference between haredim (who Bennett is saying that it's not just nice but important to have), who have no influence at the moment, and haredi politicians, who have far too much and shouldn't have any at all and whose parties should cease to exist.
