We always went with the Right
The UTJ representatives keep repeating their mantra that they started 2 years ago that "UTJ always went with the Right, that's where the masorati are who care about religion, and we will continue to only go with the Right".
Just once I would like someone to challenge either MKs Gafni or Maklev or Rabbi Goldknopf or any of the others who repeat that. Ask about the "we always went with the Right" - what about when you joined Ehud Barak's government? What about Shimon Peres's government? What about Yitzchak Rabin's government?
Their predecessors (Agudat Yisrael and before that Poalei Agudat Yisrael) also sat in the Left wing governments of Golda Meir, Levi Eshkol and David Ben Gurion.
Why does nobody ever challenge them on this?

I would say that no one challenges them because no one expects accuracy in the statements of politicians.
ReplyDeletethe charedi parties joined left wing governments before Begin, when there was no chance that right wing parties could win. They needed to be in the government to protect their interests. Deri and Barak was an exception, condemned by the Ashkenazi charedim.
ReplyDeleteI have no problem with them joining left wing governments to protect their interests. they still can if they want. they are the ones saying they never did.

Shas joined a Rabin government in 1992
Shas joined a Barak government in 1999
there can be a debate about how to categorize the Sharon governments but Shas and UTJ both served in Sharon's coalitions
Shas served in Ehud Olmert's government in 2006 and that was post-disengagement so by then Kadima was basically considered left wing but it can maybe be a debate
ReplyDeleteiirc Barak running separately and winning the popular vote should be counted as the unfortunate exception. There are no other since 1953. Unity governments with
Likud and Mafdal sitting in as principal components hardly count against unless for those with some axe to grind
Shas on the other hand side is a whole nother story. their audience operate with a different musical symmetry
