Proposed Law: Vaccination Sanctions

With the continued spread of measles, due to people who refuse to vaccinate their children, an unvaccinated baby died this past week in Jerusalem.

MKs Yoel Hasson (Hamachane Hatzioni) and Shuli Muallem Refaeli (Habayit Hayehudi) have proposed a law that impose sanctions on parents who do not vaccinate their children. According to the proposal, parents refusing to vaccinate their children will be invited to a meeting in whichthe relevant information explaining the need will be transmitted to them. If they continue to refuse the vaccinations. they will lose a tax point - the value of which is about 2000nis per year.  As well, children will not be allowed into school without a confirmation letter from a doctor stating the child has been vaccinated.

The legislative committee of the Knesset was set to debate the proposal this morning but postponed the discussion for two weeks. The Ministry of Health has said it will support this proposal.

  1. The original proposal called for them to have to pay higher bituach leumi, which wouldn't affect Neturei Karta, but would affect regular charedim.

So Litzman stepped in, surprise surprise, and changed it to this.

People who don't pay taxes don't have to worry about points.

    1. last point, about people who dont pay taxes, I thought of, but they are not most of the people who dont vaccinate, even if most of the neturei karta people dont (which i do not know), so I am not sure how significant that is.

the first point is interesting and I was not aware of this twist.

    2. I don't understand. If Litzman is pro-vaccine (and it appears he is), why would he protect Charedim who don't vaccinate due to "religious" reasons? Is this simple knee-jerk protectionism that is designed to kill people? I'd hate for that to be the case, as Litzman seems to be doing a decent job as Minister of Health.

    3. while he seems to want to improving the general health systems, and seems to do a good job at it, he doesnt want to affect his fellow haredim in any way they might construe as negative, even if he disagrees personally.
