yeshiva boys go wild in attack

The various news media, including Haredi media, are reporting about what they call a "pogrom", exacted last night by the boys of a Vizshnitz yeshiva against the boys and dormitory of a neighboring Sefardi yeshiva.

The video is pretty wild:

wow!

The standard comments have already been made in the general media, such as chilul hashem, pogrom, etc, with condemnations by politicians. This morning news reports have the police investigating the matter.

It seems the background to this attack is that the young men in the Sefardi yeshiva have provoked the hassidic boys a number of times by throwing eggs, shouting epitaphs at them as they pass and harassing their Rebbe and throwing things at his car. After another attack in which the Sefardi boys threw bags of water at some of the Hassidic boys, the Hassidic boys decided it was the straw that broke the camels back and it was time to retaliate.

Not to justify how they responded, but some context is always good.

It looks like the type of response Israelis call "baal habayit hishtagea" which basically means the homeowner went crazy and did something extreme just to show the tenant not to mess with him in the future. These guys seem to have responded in that fashion with such an extreme response that those yeshiva boys likely wont mess with them again..

  1. Maybe the Sefardi biys were attacked first and reacted? After which the Vizhnitz boys retaliated? Either way - Lo Zu Haderach. And IMHO a Chilul HaShem made by both sides. Where are their Rabbinic leaders?

    1. Boys will be boys. I'm sorry they didn't act like a cantankerous old fogie who has a problem with behavior and thoughts not exactly like his own. It may not be the proper behavior even if we had all the facts, and we don't. But,not every act is a chillul hashem that is the end of the world. Maybe being late for shachris or disagreeing in a public forum with those who are much greater than you is a chillul hashem also.

    2. I dont think this is a chillul Hashem. This is normal adolescent kid stuff and makes me smile. not EVERY slight thing not perfectly righteous they do is a chilul Hashem...cut them some slack

    3. Yes, boys will be boys.
As you can see from their delighted faces, while committing one CHoshen Mishpat transgression after another, their black garb and all-day Torah learning has no effect on their behavior.

    4. I am not sure how "boys will be boys" fits. Sure, boys will be boys and maybe a couple of kids get into a fight. Maybe some boys prank some other boys with a bucket of water over a door or whatever, or throw a few firecrackers, take some doors off the hinges, toilet paper the building. This was a level of violence and destruction that does not qualify for "boys will be boys"

  2. "Shouting epitaphs..."

I wonder if this is closer to the truth if they hate each other so much they want to kill each other...
