calling for gas tank reform

We woke up this morning to news of a terrible story in Jerusalem. A leak from a gas tank (a tank for supplying gas to a house) led to an explosion,. Part of the building collapsed and a family was killed - wiped oout.

The only thing I have to say about this, besides for Baruch Dayan HaEmes, is that gas tanks should be made illegal. They are old and dangerous. The gas companies should be required to lay new infrastructure to pipe the gas right in - even to old houses. They should not be using gas tanks any longer.

We need this gas tank reform. True, it is only one accident, but everywhere else it is just an accident waiting to happen. The first apartment we lived in after marriage was an old building that used these gas balloons. Besides for being inefficient and a nuisance, they are terribly dangerous. It is a miracle, in my opinion, that accidents do not happen more frequently. it might be a part of the special protection the Jews of Eretz Yisrael have, but it is time to no longer rely on miracles...

  2. ditch the balloons and pipe gas into every house directly, like most modern houses have. the only houses still using tanks are the houses that are very old. just like one day they were all modernized with telephone wiring and electricity, they should all be modernized with direct gas lines.

  3. 1. Piped in gas has plenty of bad accidents as well. And they are almost always larger accidents because they involve flowing gas rather than a single canister.
    2. Laying gas pipes is very expensive. The cost of gas service could easily double or triple. And then it won't be worth it anymore when compared to using electricity instead.
    3. Here in Florida, most places don't have central (piped) gas either, so people who want gas service either bury their own tank or use gas canisters.
    4. Even in many places up north, people use gas canisters. My friend's uncle was killed by an exploding gas canister about 20 years ago in NY.
