demand for overturning elections becomes trendy
It seems like we are meant to set an example... From Zion shall go forth the Torah..Ohr LaGoyim, and all that jazz...
It seems like Bet Shemesh is very machmir on this concept...
By now you surely know the district court has overturned the Bet Shemesh elections and called for new elections, due to fraud. (the court decision is being appealed, and the Supreme Court will make the final decision on this). A large number of residents were very vocal in the demand for overturning the elections, due to fraud.
Now, the example, and precedent, has been set.
A couple of days ago the Asra Kadisha filed a lawsuit with the District Court of Jerusalem to overturn the elections that had been held 3 months ago among buyers of the Givat Yerushalayim housing project n Bet Shemesh. In those elections, a committee was selected to represent the interests of the buyers.
The lawsuit points to the municipal Bet Shemesh elections and the court decision about overturning them, and says that there is a connection between those that were accused of the fraud and between the mayor himself, Moshe Abutbol. And, they want the elections for the housing project overturned in the same way the Bet Shemesh elections were.
Why?
They claim that the groups are one and the same and they also likely voted fraudulently in the housing project elections.

And now, in an unrelated to Bet Shemesh election, there is an appeal to the Supreme Court to overturn recent elections for the Rabbinic Council of the Rabbanut.
Advocate Mordechai Eisenberg, of the Movement for Proper Governance, filed the suit claiming there were no real elections. He says the members were selected in the elections as the result of a deal, and a letter was publicized promoting the deal supposedly with the agreement of the Chief Rabbis, and this thwarted free elections. As well, the letter itself had been a lie, as the Chief Rabbis have denied agreement to the deal.

In the meantime, the court has demanded responses from the members of the rabbinic council asking why the elections should not be overturned, pointing to several instances of fraud and deception in the campaigning that must be answered.

The non-elections to the chief rabanut were definitely a sham and I have a hunch that the Bayit Yehudi went along because they wanted to keep a lower profile after pissing of the Haredim and also for 'losing' the chief rabbi elections (even though they didn't really try). In a radio interview, Mordechai Eisenberg said that many a rabbi wanted to run for elections and would not dare go against the top ten consensus already chosen, and on top of that, some of the current members wanted off the coucil but the 'deal' was struck cementing the slate.
