Quote of the Day

We need to allow the light rail to operate every day of the week. The light rail should be treated like a Shabbat elevator that stops at every station.

-- Mayor of Tel Aviv Ron Huldai, seemingly making a push to have the new light rail system operate on Shabbos as well

it is a cute comparison and maybe such a system could be made to work, but it does not just get "treated like a Shabbat elevator". It would need to be operating on automatic with many other details taken care of (such as payment and other mechanical and electrical issues) for it to be similar to a Shabbat elevator.

  1. The Staten Island Railroad is free for most of its route- just the stops closest to Manhattan require payment. Orthodox Jews do ride it on Shabbat. I don't know if there's actual rabbinic approval for that. Of course, it's run by non-Jews, or at least probably is.

The fact that this is all electric probably helps too.

  2. Actually perhaps somebody should back the Mayor against the wall and start asking some hard questions such as whether its going to run on Shabbat and Yom Tov for free (and are the owners of the franchise going to be enthused about donating?), how many Jews are they going to fire in order to have workers who will work on Shabbat (it isn't completely automated and will require security and maitenance as well) who will get double pay while the train produces no income for the owners, and I'[m sure there are going to be be a lot of other issues.
