Quote of the Day

Whoever forged [votes] in Bet Shemesh will have to make a personal accounting of his actions... in Elad there were cases prepared with forged ballots. I strongly opposed going to the courts over this against other Haredi candidates, as strong as the claims might have been.

  -- MK Aryeh Deri (Shas)

It's the first time a Haredi MK has spoken about the subject without using the spin of downplaying the level of forgery or blaming the accusation on anti-haredi sentiments.

  1. Aryeh Deri lost in Elad to Yisrael Porush, the son of Meir Porush, the one who has a party called Koach who are said to be behing the forgeries in Beit Shemesh.
In other words, what Deri is saying is that the Porushes forged the vote in Elad which brought them the victory, and they are responsible for what happened in Beit Shemesh as well.

    1. While taking the high road in stating that Shas will not challenge the results.

It's interesting that in Beit Shemesh, it seems that Shas was both the victim and the beneficiary of the alleged fraud in that the Shas candidate for mayor benefited, while the Shas slate for the moatza presumably was hurt at the expense of Koach. It's also interesting that while the reaction to this scandal has naturally aligned with the haredi/non-haredi fault line, it seems - both from this quote and from other things I have heard - that the actual fraud allegations reflect more of an intra-haredi battle that happens to have affected the mayoral race also. I'm not sure if that's really the case, but that's the impression I've gotten from some people. Rafi, you seem to be very well informed - is there something to this?

    2. that is a major theory, especially among haredim (those who dont deny the fraud, at least).. I would add that everybody knew the elections would be close. Even if the frauds main intention was to help a party get vote and into city council, with the mayoral benefit being secondary, they also had to know that giving the mayor x number of extra votes would also make a significant difference.
It was not one rather than the other. it had to be both, though perhaps one was more of the focus.

Perhaps they dont have the luxury to (as they need him for a potential coalition and support), but I really dont understand why they havent blacklisted, or at least strongly criticized, the koach representatives, for getting them into this mess. They could have even taken the tactic of dumping it all on that in court -Admitting to fraud , blame it all on koach, let koach pay the price, and argue that was the only fraud and claim the mayor didnt benefit at all from it.. call for new elections for city council but not for mayor. invalidate all of koach's votes, or other ideas..
