An ironic, or should I say Iranic, situation
On Thursday the Knesset debated Iranian pistachio nuts. Israel imports a lot of Iranian pistachio nuts via Turkey (another dear friend of Israel), and the United States of America wants to cut into the business. They debated the level of taxes to impose on the Iranian-Turkish pistachio nuts, while the American nuts are tax-free, thus making them more expensive thereby limiting the import - less people will buy them as they get too expensive. I find it ironic that we are worried about Iranian nuclear weapons, and we are pushing the whole world to impose sanctions on Iran, yet here we are buying Iranian products, and simply discussing how much to tax them. Are our Knesset members idiots? Is there a reason they have not disallowed any Iranian products from entering Israel, even via Turkey or any other country, from the minute they found out that it was really an Iranian product?
