the minhag is to fight about it

The big debate today is the government decision to minimize or limit the fireworks displays on Yom Haatzmaut this week. The reason for the decision is to show sensitivity to our IDF veterans, among others, who suffer from PTSD and the like who get triggered by the explosions of the fireworks displays.

I dont personally have a strong opinion either way. I get the idea of being sensitive to the people suffering who are the ones who fought for our ability to be here, and I also get the opposition to curtailing a normal form of celebration because "a few people" can't handle it, let alone the suspicion some are accusing the government of - canceling the fireworks as a way of toning down celebrations so as not to upset the Arabs... I really dont know which way to go, and I really hope that the accusation of there being more to it with weakness at its core is false.

The thing that is most interesting is the people fighting and screaming loudest about this decision and accusing Bennett's government of being weak and spineless actually proposed this exact law this past January, to minimize fireworks in favor of soldiers suffering PTSD. The most right wing MKs signed on to the law proposal but are now screaming that Bennett is spineless for acting on the same idea.

And my friend Ben pointed out aptly that so many screamed about how the allowing of chametz on Pesach in the hospitals is triggering and will cause distress to religious people and just the sight of someone else's chametz might treif up the entire hospital and make people refuse medical care and send people into shock are now scoffing at the idea that fireworks explosions might trigger actual PTSD in suffering soldiers and veterans and saying it is a ruse..

It turns out, like the old joke, the minhag is to fight about everything no matter what you actually believe should be done
