I'm not sure what you mean by "mental illness" unless you consider the complete and utter devotion (to the exclusion of any other facts) to one man (or a small group of men) to be a mental illness. They do what the Rabbis tell them to do - no more and no less.
And this devotion to man is quite antithetical to Jewish values which strongly encourage questioning and in fact is the essence of the Socratic method of learning fact from fiction. The only complete and utter devotion in Judaism is to God.
It's hard to believe collective mental illness could be taken to such extremes.
