Credit where due
I, once again, have to give a lot of credit to Minister of Housing Arial Attias (Shas). If there is one guy in the government who is actually focused and concentrating on his ministry and doing the work he is meant to be doing, it is Arial Attias.
He has completely turned the housing industry around. He has moved it from stagnation to a vibrant office, pushing projects all around the country. This is all despite the construction problems brought about by the political process. Attias ignores the fact that in a large percentage of the country he cannot build right now, and instead pushes major projects in the parts where he can build. He is thinking big, he is creating big projects, and he is getting the job done.
Today up for final approval is a project down south near Arad called Kasif, which is meant to be a Haredi city of 10,000 housing units, estimated for 50,000 people. In addition, Harish-Katzir up north is moving along in the planning stages, along with thousands of other units around the country in places like Lod, Bet Shemesh, Tiberias, Nazereth Ilit, and other places.

ReplyDeleteMaybe he can build a new Haredi city near us as well and leave BS as a happily mixed city.
Are all of those Haredi, or is he heading up any housing projects for other segments of the population as well?
ReplyDeleteI only listed some of the main projects - the largest of them. There are a lot of other projects around the country building smaller numbers of homes - 20 units here, 300 units there, etc. These larger projects might be mosty haredi, but there are a lot of smaller projects around the country that are not designated for haredim.
ReplyDeleteThe ones I listed are mostly designated for the haredi public, some at the request of the cities themselves rather than decided upon by the ministry. For example, the new neighborhoods in Tiberias and Nazareth are both being develoepd as haredi neighborhoods by request of the mayor and city council.
Bet Shemesh is officially listed as not designated for any sector - it is open for a mixed public. We wait to see who buys there, but the official designation is not haredi.

funny you should mention it, but I just read the Eli Yishai and Attias are in a bit fo a fight over just that. Yishai wants to push these projects very strongly. Attias is uncomfortable with the fact that they are sending haredim only to the far away remote locations and is starting to waffle on how to promote the more remote projects.
