Quote Of The Day
Quote Of The Day
Regarding what has happened in our land recently, that unfortunately different people are trying to make stale the fragrance of Torat Yisrael via actions that should never be taken, via causing the desecration of Hashem in public, without thinking about the consequences of their actions, and have been brazen to shame and degrade others in public, to degrade and vilify others... It is not the time to be silent, and I cannot stop from speaking out. .. I must reveal my opinion and to announce publicly that this is not the way of our Torah, as its ways are the ways of pleasantness and its paths are in peace.
-- Rav Ovadia Yosef

Funny that ROY doesn't find it "unnecessary" to condemn thuggery in the name of the Torah. Why is it so hard for other gedolei HaTorah to make such a statement?
ReplyDeleteThe real question is why was it so hard to make such a statement BEFORE this exploded all over the country? This is the solution to the problem of 4 months ago. Unfortunately, the problem has grown and morphed since then. It's out of control now and statements like this now are like closing the barn door after the horses have run away. Why always a step behind?
ReplyDeleteI think Rav Ovadia did the right thing. It's not like the thugs are going to listen to him anyway. I think the importance of these condemnations is to reaffirm for ourselves, and especially for our children, that these actions are wrong, without qualification. Eventually, if all or most of the rabbaim in the country, and particularly in Beit Shemesh, were to take a stand against violence in the name of tzniut (or for any other reason), I think this would would have an impact on the kanaim, but I think that's a very long-term proposition.
ReplyDeletehe took his time saying it. I dont know if he was pressured to say anything (he doesnt submit much to pressure) or why else he might have waited until now. my impression though is that the importance, from his perspective, similar to Rabbi Horowitz, is just in the sense of rejecting the chilul hashem.
ReplyDeleteIt's good he said it. Some thins ROY say are very good. However he also said yesterday, that he would instruct SHAS MKs to vote against the Tzohar law, regarding the Rabbanei Tzohar. So in one hand, he offers an olive branch to the secular public, yet takes it away with the second hand. A pity!
