DL primed for leadership

I saw in the paper yesterday that in the IDF Golani unit, the trend of more and more officers being from the religious community is continuously increasing. 6 out of 8 newly appointed offices are from Dati Leumi yeshivas. Aside from that, in other units as well the percentages are also going up.

An army source, quoted in the newspaper, discussing thre high level of motivation to serve in combat units among the DL yeshiva boys, said that he is unsure of whether this is more a sign of honor among the National Religious or more a sign of failure among the general/secular public.

The DL community is poised for taking real leadership positions in the country. Unfortunately they have never made that transition in their minds and have always focused inward, on staying small, similar to the way the haredi community is more concerned with itself rather than spreading out.

With the increasing levels of positions of influence they are taking control of, it is about time they made the switch and stopped just being concerned with insular issues and start spreading their wings and becoming influential in real leadership of the country.

  1. I would be careful about getting excited about such a development. Look at Elazar Stern, former chief of manpower in the army, and Elyakim Rubenstein, Supreme Court justice, for what can go wrong when religious people get to positions of power. They feel they must "prove themselves" that they are just like their secular brethren.
(maybe Rahm Emannuel is also an example? But not sure if he counts)

  2. So you think we should vote for the bigger parties (Likud, Labor, Kadima) rather than strengthening the smaller, more narrow, religious parties?

I think that this is pretty much what Hershkovitz tried to do in the last election ("a vote for us is a vote for Bibi!!" if you recall). See how great that's working out for him...

  3. the simple answer to the question is what is the total number of graduates? if it is the same, and just more are DL, that's a success. If it's less, then the ratio is down and where are the non-DL. what's the big deal with such a simple question?
