Quote Of The Day

this is going to be a combo quote.. one quote, and the response to it, and the response to that...

Quote Of The Day

The Talmud is printed in our country in 122 different editions. The Talmud is learned in our schools as an integral part of the school curriculum in Korea. We have conducted studies to determine why the Jews are smart and have come to the conclusion that the study of Talmud develops the thought process and the intellectual capabilities. So, we decided to add this study in all of our schools in Korea.

--- Korean Ambassador to Israel Mr. Kim Il So

If so, we will relocate to live in Korea

  -- MK Moshe Gafni (UTJ)

You can go live in North Korea, and we will go to live in South Korea

-- MK Yochanan Plessner (KADIMA) to the Shas MKS..

  1. Funny quotes but pretty sure they're not learning eilu metzios and keitzad mevarchin. Here's a post debunking the idea of them learning the actual Shas that we're familiar with. http://blog.dovidgottlieb.com/2011/03/debunking-korean-talmud-story.html (funny if they think it's the stories in Shas that makes us smart)

  2. Moreover, I'm not sure subsidizing full time Talmud study is exactly what the Koreans have in mind.

What plenty of smart Jews have been taught, and what Korea is teaching their students, are the stories told in the Gemora. I never read the daf, but I know that Hillel spent a night on the roof top of a school he wasn't allowed to enter. And the most unaffiliated Reform Jew knows that story as well.
